How the final exam calculation works
Your current grade represents the coursework outside the final exam. Enter the final’s percentage weight from your syllabus and the overall course grade you want.
For example, with an 85% current grade, a final worth 20%, and a goal of 90%, you need 110% on the final. That exceeds a standard 100% exam, so the goal requires extra credit or a change to the grading assumptions.
If you have 95%, the final is worth 20%, and your goal is 75%, a 0% final still leaves you with 76% overall. The calculator will say that your goal is already achievable with zero.
Which current grade should I enter?
Use your pre-final average, with the final excluded. A gradebook that already counts an ungraded final as zero will not give the right starting number. This tool assumes a single final and a linear weighted grading system; it does not model curves, dropped assignments, or minimum exam requirements.
Calculate coursework first with the Grade Calculator or Weighted Grade Calculator.
How letter grades work here
We use a simple U.S. reference scale without plus or minus grades. Your school may use different cutoffs. Letter grades use the unrounded percentage; displayed results are rounded to two decimal places.
| Letter | Percentage |
|---|---|
| A | 90% and above |
| B | 80% to below 90% |
| C | 70% to below 80% |
| D | 60% to below 70% |
| F | Below 60% |
