How weighted grades are calculated
Enter a percentage grade and a percentage weight for each category. Each category contributes its grade multiplied by its weight, divided by 100.
For example, homework at 90% with a 30% weight contributes 27 percentage points. Exams at 80% with a 70% weight contribute 56 points. Together, they give 83% (B).
What if weights do not total 100%?
The calculator warns you and shows an average normalized to the weights you entered: sum of (grade × weight) ÷ total weight. For example, 90% at 30% and 80% at 30% gives an average of 85% across that 60% of the course. It is not a complete course grade.
A zero-weight category is allowed and does not affect the result. At least one category must have positive weight. Extra-credit grades above 100% are allowed; category weights must be between 0% and 100%.
For equally counted points, use the Grade Calculator. To work toward a target, use the Final Grade Calculator.
How letter grades work here
We use a simple U.S. reference scale without plus or minus grades. Your school may use different cutoffs. Letter grades use the unrounded percentage; displayed results are rounded to two decimal places.
| Letter | Percentage |
|---|---|
| A | 90% and above |
| B | 80% to below 90% |
| C | 70% to below 80% |
| D | 60% to below 70% |
| F | Below 60% |
